HDR - High Dynamic Range - Manipulation of Space

Part of the defining aspect to surrealist paintings is the dynamic range of colours used. This can be likened to the photography technique of HDR.

HDR - High-dynamic-range imaging allows for a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. This wide dynamic range can allow HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, but can be used to create a surreal appearance to an otherwise normal space.

This photograph of a relatively normal scene of a train has been given an extremely surreal appearance with the use of HDR photography. This technique gives a different perception of the space and subject so we perceive it differently compared to the same photograph with standard tonal mapping.

A range of under exposed to over exposed photos have been taken to pick up all the different tones.
The photos are combine using the best parts from the range to produce this surreal toned image.
